Abstract

Steel structures are widely used in maritime environments because they have good strength and load-bearing ability. However, exposure to seawater, salt levels, moisture, and other environmental conditions can accelerate the occurrence of corrosion on steel surfaces. Uncontrolled corrosion can lead to a decrease in material quality, reduce structural strength, and shorten service life. One of the methods widely used to protect steel structures from corrosion is coating. Coating functions as a protective layer that inhibits direct contact between the steel surface and the corrosive environment. This article discusses the role of coatings in improving the durability of steel structures in the maritime environment, the main problems faced, the protection approaches that have been applied, and the factors that affect the effectiveness of coatings. The results of the discussion show that coatings can increase the resistance of steel structures to corrosion if material selection, surface preparation, application processes, and maintenance are carried out appropriately. Therefore, coating needs to be seen as part of a structural protection system that is carried out in a planned and sustainable manner to maintain performance and extend the service life of steel structures in the maritime environment.
